Dilwar Hussain

Dilwar has deep connections with Muslim communities across the UK and bring a specialised knowledge of theology and its relation to social issues which is invaluable for Maslaha.

Dilwar Hussain graduated from King's College, University of London in 1993. He is Head of the Policy Research Centre, based at the Islamic Foundation, Leicestershire, where he has previously held posts of Research Fellow (on Citizenship and Community Cohesion) and Assistant-Editor of the Muslim World Book Review. He is an Associate Lecturer at the Open University tutoring on the Islam in the West course, and is a Fellow of the Faiths and Civil Society Unit at Goldsmith College.

Dilwar has taught MA level courses on Islam in Europe and Muslims in Britain at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education (MIHE). He has been involved in designing, managing and delivering diversity training courses for the last seven years and is currently training with the FCO, CLG and other Government departments. He is a columnist for Emel, a lifestyle magazine.

Dilwar was appointed as a Commissioner to the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in April 2006. He worked on the Preventing Extremism Together workgroups set up by the Home Office after July 7th 2005. His primary research interests are citizenship, Muslim communities in Europe & Britain and British Muslim identity. Dilwar has worked in academic research and policy consultancy for the last ten years, in the process of which he has delivered contracts for private sector groups as well as government departments and the European Commission.

He is involved in a number of Europe-wide and UK based research networks and projects, including the European Muslim Network and the Muslims in Britain Research Network. He is on the Advisory Board of the Institute of Community Cohesion and is an Associate of the think-tank, Demos. He served on the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on Urban Life and Faith (2005 - 2006), is a Fellow of the Royal Foundation of St. Katharine's Contextual Theology Centre, London and a Fellow of the Citizen Organising Foundation (COF). He was co-chair of Alif-Aleph UK (2005), a network which brings together British Jews and Muslims and has been listed on the ‘Who's Who of British Muslims' by www.salaam.co.uk. Dilwar is married, has three children and lives in Leicester.
