Community anti-racism demands for politicians
Introduction
We know that politics isn’t simply about voting in elections but is also about how we organise to take practical action and learn together regardless of who is in Government.
However, we can use this election moment to hold to account all politicians and political parties wanting our vote. Below are some issues and questions which will show how committed a politician is in tackling systemic racism now and whoever forms the next government.
The Need
There remains a lack of racial literacy among politicians about how policies like Prevent, the expansion of the prison system, and police in schools, harm our communities. Our public services in important areas like health continue to take a one size fits all approach and not understand the specific needs of racialised communities.
What We Did
We have highlighted 5 community demands which can be used to raise issues with politicians and parties in the lead up to election, as well as holding them to account once a new government is formed. The demands also highlight how interconnected policies like Prevent are to censorship and over-policing of racialised identities.
