Surviving Society podcast
Maslaha, UK prisons & Social Justice
18 March 2025
Maslaha partnered with Surviving Society on this podcast series to explore Islamophobia and anti-Blackness in the prison system. With nearly 14,000 Muslims making up 18% of the prison population, we know from our work that they are often prevented from practicing Islam because our faith is seen as a threat, and prisons are fundamentally about control.
In the podcast, we hear from people who have been denied their fundamental rights with no accountability and how this is a systemic issue that cannot be safeguarded against by policy guidelines.
We also hear from leading experts in knowledge production, practice, and community organising about how wider carceral systems from the school to policing in the streets and prisons, target racialised communities by design. And how we can counter this over-policing and build our own community infrastructure.
